Dear Fellow Harvard University Alums: Thank you very much for your vote of confidence in electing me President of Harvard Club of the Republic of China. Following the hard work put forth by past presidents of our Association and together with my fellow board members of the Harvard Club of the Republic of China, I will do my best to continue the tradition of leading and serving our alumni association here in Taiwan. We are fortunate to have Danny Chiu, with much experience managing people and Arlene Lien with much experience organizing events as our vice presidents. Our board of directors of the Harvard Club of the Republic of China consists of professors, lawyers, doctors, architects, government representatives, bankers, entrepreneurs, management consultants, corporate managers and investment professionals. Indeed, our board reflects Harvard University’s strength in academic and professional diversity. As a group, we hope to liaise and serve as a bridge between our alums, university and community. As such, we have made our top priority to improve communication with Harvard alums in Taiwan, our mother college in Massachusetts and our community here. Communicating through our Association’s website will be our main focus. As such, we will upgrade our web page (www.harvardclub.org.tw) to include not only alumni directory and announcements concerning social and speaker events but also for Harvard alums looking to recruit other fellow alums in Taiwan. We also hope that through our Alumni Association’s magazine, Harvard People which is published annually and under the leadership of my fellow board member Angela Fan, our alums will be able to share their ideas with our community and record the various events held by our Association throughout the year. This year’s Harvard People focuses on leadership amongst Harvard alums in Taiwan. It is most suitable given that Ma Ying Jeou, our fellow Harvard alum in Taiwan and former President of Harvard Club of the Republic of Chin, became President of Republic of China this year. As alums of Harvard, we hope to encourage more people from Taiwan applying to Harvard so that they can too one day join us as peers in our Harvard Club of the Republic of China. Through our Harvard Book Prize Award which is given out to junior high school students with outstanding academic standards and exceptional extra curricular activities, we hope to identify to Harvard University potential high school recruits who might not otherwise have thought of applying to Harvard. The Harvard Book Prize program under the supervision of our fellow board member Henry Ho is only in its second year but has been growing rapidly in its popularity amongst local high schools. From only two schools applying and two students receiving awards last year, we have had nine schools applying for this prize this year and our Association awarded prizes to ten students. Our board members also continue to play greater role in assisting Harvard University identify qualified candidates through interviewing potential Harvard candidates and writing recommendations for them. Our Association also continues to grant scholarships to those who have been accepted to Harvard University but need some financial assistance to enroll. This scholarship program which has been under the leadership of Chairman Yu Zheng Hsiung for over a decade is possible through generous donations from alums and friends here in Taiwan who believe that students should not be discouraged from attending Harvard University because of financial hardships. This year our Association granted more than US$35,000 to three students who demonstrated outstanding qualities and financial need. Although this money would not cover all expenses during their study at Harvard University, each student who received over US$10,000 should find some cushion from the high cost of living at Harvard University. Our Association feels strongly in inviting alums to join our Harvard Club of the Republic of China upon graduation from Harvard. As such, we are working closely with our mother school in communicating with students at Harvard who are near graduation and interested in coming to Taiwan. We also began working closely with the Taiwan Cultural Society (TCS) of Harvard University, which is a student organization at Harvard University run by students who have ties with Taiwan or want to learn more about Taiwan. Having participated as a speaker in this year’s TCS conference in Taipei and watching Harvard University students of TCS teach leadership courses to Taiwanese high school students, I was impressed with the level of maturity and their dedication expressed by these Harvard junior and senior students and wait proudly for their joining our Harvard Club of the Republic of China when they graduate. Fellow alums here in Taiwan have voiced that our Association should play greater role in community service. In the past, our Association has organized forums to invite speakers to express and debate various topics to foster greater issue awareness amongst people in Taiwan. The Harvard Forum hosted by our Alumni Association board member Lee Ji Zhu was especially well received by alums and community. We hope to continue organizing such events in conjunction with professors from Harvard University visiting Taiwan or when we can identify alums willing to share their views in public. Our Association has also provided monetary donations to non-profit organizations over the years through generous gifts at our Ivy League Ball. Our Alumni Association has been an active member in organizing the Ivy League Ball which is a formal event organized by the Ivy League Schools in Taiwan annually to provide an evening of social networking and raising money for charitable causes. Last year, the Ivy League Ball raised over NT$700,000 and donated to Min-Ho Junior High School for construction of a library. This year’s Ivy League Ball will be held on Dec. 14, 2008 at Hyatt Hotel in Taipei. We hope that every alum can join us for a night of good cause and fun. Lastly but just as important is that our alums here in Taiwan want our Association to organize events for networking. We will continue to provide such gatherings amongst our alumni network and jointly with other university alumni organizations or professional organizations. We encourage all alums to communicate with our Alumni Association and our board members for new ideas or ways to improve our Association’s activities. It is only through dialogue that we can understand how we are doing and how we can better improve our Association. For those alums who have not joined our Association, we welcome you to our Association. You can go on our website(www.harvardclub.org.tw)or contact myself or one of our board members for further details in how to join our organization. We hope that our alumni members will continue to be proud of being associated with Harvard University and with the Harvard Club of the Republic of China, just the same way each and every alumni must have felt when getting that acceptance letter from Harvard University or that Harvard diploma in your hands. We alums of Harvard University have many fond memories our life at Harvard University. The Harvard Club of the Republic of China is confident that fellow alums will also form worthwhile memories through participation in our Alumni Association’s activities. We look forward to creating happy memories with all of you. Sincerely, TY Lin President Harvard Club of the Republic of
China
